If you love the outdoors, then you will adore Sawnee Mountain Preserve. It is located 40 miles north of Atlanta and offers 821 acres of stunning natural space. Enjoy hiking trails, picnic areas, and a visitor’s center. There is a great deal to see and do. Here are some of the top activities.
Amazing Trails
A visit to the Sawnee Mountain Preserve is not complete without a journey along the trails that are its hallmark. The preserve features a striking 11 miles of wooded trails for walkers, runners, and hikers, leading you around the mountain. Some trails are simple, while others are more challenging. You’ll see old gold mine areas and have the opportunity to take in spectacular views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Sawnee Mountain Preserve Visitor Center
If you’d like a thorough educational experience when you go to Sawnee, then be sure to check out the visitor center as well. It offers great interactive exhibits detailing the natural and cultural history of the mountain. There is also a great resource library and lounge area, so you can sit and relax a bit. The visitor center also offers rental spaces for larger groups who would like to come. You can rent the amphitheater space, the classroom, and even picnic pavilions.
Central Park Recreation Center
There are three recreation centers that are close by. The Central Park Recreation Center has various opening hours to suit your needs. Pop by for a visit from Monday to Thursday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., on Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., or on Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. Amenities at the center include two gymnasiums, a cardio-weight room, a walking track, classrooms for art activities, dance and fitness classrooms, and more.
Disc Golf
The preserve has disc golf on-site, which makes for a fun activity for the whole family. There are two parks for golf: Central Park and Chattahoochee Pointe. The venue at Central Park includes a lovely 18-hole course, and it’s only open during the day. Throughout the circuit, there’s a mix of long and short holes — some are wooded and others have an open space. You can distinguish the difficulty level by the tee color (white for beginner, red for intermediate, and blue for advanced). There are also a variety of ways to work through the circuit. Be sure to check out the Sunday Random Draw Doubles, which is great for all ages and skill levels.
Shady Grove Campground
When you come by Sawnee Mountain Reserve, why stay for just a day? Camp overnight at Shady Grove Campground nearby and enjoy the spectacular scenery. To book a stay at the site, the main office is open from March 15 to Nov. 2. Check out the tent and RV sites, the beach and swimming area, the boat ramp and dock, the group campsites, and the playground.
There is a tremendous amount to see and do around Sawnee Mountain Preserve. Come camp out, visit the recreation center, and enjoy the fantastic view from the top of the mountain.
