If you’re looking for outdoor adventure, Forsyth County and the Cumming area have plenty of parks and recreation areas to enjoy. From water playgrounds and activities to nature trails and picnic areas, here are several Cumming area parks you need to visit.
Buford Dam Park
Buford Dam Park in Buford, Georgia, is a short 20-minute trip from Cumming. The park is situated just by the Buford Dam and features a beach, play area, and swimming area on Lake Lanier. You can enjoy a day kayaking or paddleboarding, but boats and jet skis aren’t allowed. The park also sits near the Chattahoochee River, where you can adventure further for a kayaking or fishing adventure. The 3.8-mile Laurel Ridge Trail also passes through Buford Dam Park.
Caney Creek Preserve
Caney Creek Preserve is part of the Forsyth County Parks and Recreation Department and features just under 2 miles of nature trails, picnic areas with two pavilions for rent, a dog park, and a playground. The nature trails run alongside the Caney Creek, a small meandering stream featuring plenty of spots to look out for wildlife and enjoy nature. For an afternoon of family fun, head to Caney Creek Preserve.
Coal Mountain Park
Coal Mountain Park is a Cumming community area that features 11 different sports areas, including seven baseball and softball fields, two tennis courts, one soccer and lacrosse field, and one Miracle League field, which is a baseball diamond designed for children with disabilities. The park also houses batting cages and two playgrounds. If you’re bringing the kids, this park has plenty of space for running around. There is also a paved mile-long walking trail for jogging and exercise, and you can use one of two pavilions if you’re out for a picnic. The community building is also available for rent.
Cumming Aquatic Center
The Cumming Aquatic Center is a great place to splash around on a hot day. Cumming Aquatic Center is right in the heart of Cumming and is the perfect place to take competitive swim lessons, let the kids play in the outdoor pool and splash playground, or catch a swim meet. The Center also offers classes, including exercise swimming, diving, and children and infant safety courses. Open swim, where community members can come freely to swim and play in the aquatic park, is every day, with different hours for weekdays and weekends.
Big Creek Greenway
The Big Creek Greenway is a linear park designed for conservation efforts, environmental education, alternative transportation, and recreation. The Greenway consists of a 12-foot-wide cement and boardwalk pathway that traverses through 11 miles of the deciduous flora of Forsyth County, from Ronald Reagan Boulevard to Kelly Mill Road. It’s the perfect spot for walking, jogging, inline skating, and biking. You can also take your dog for a walk, as long as you keep it on a leash.
