Cumming, Georgia, is situated on Lake Lanier, about an hour north of Atlanta. The lake is part of the Chattahoochee River system, and the area features many excellent recreation areas and parks where you can enjoy fishing on the lake or the Chattahoochee River. Here are some of the best recreation and fishing areas in Cumming.
Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area
The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area is part of the 48-mile strand of the Chattahoochee River National Park system, starting below Buford Dam and Cumming and ending around 10 miles northwest of Atlanta. The Chattahoochee National Recreation Area offers excellent fishing, boating, and water activities, and you can usually fish for bass, catfish, trout, and other freshwater species. The Chattahoochee River maintains a cool temperature year-round and rarely rises above 50 degrees, making it the perfect spot for angling cool-water fish.
Little Ridge Park
Little Ridge Park sits on Lake Lanier in Cumming and offers plenty of outdoor recreation, from picnicking to boating and fishing. The park has numerous pavilions and picnic areas, and many have grills so you can bring burgers and hotdogs for an outdoor lunch. There are nature trails for hiking and lookouts along the lake to enjoy the view. Fish on the lake for different species of bass, catfish, trout, and walleye pike.
Mary Alice Park
Another lovely recreation area on Lake Lanier is Mary Alice Park, a small recreational park that features three paved boat ramps and two boat docks for loading and unloading passengers and supplies. The park also has a pavilion for rent for large outdoor parties and events, picnic tables with grilling areas, and a beach area for swimming. Once you head out onto the lake, look for common species like bass, catfish, and trout.
Amicalola Falls State Park
Amicalola Falls State Park is part of the Chattahoochee National Forest and features the third-largest waterfall system east of the Mississippi. Amicalola is about 45 minutes north of Cumming, but it’s well worth the drive. You can fish for stocked trout in the ponds, streams, and pools throughout the park and enjoy a truly breath-taking view of the southern-most point of the Appalachian Trail when you hike along the park’s many trails. You can also camp, and the park’s facilities feature bathrooms, showers, and access to electricity. Be sure to check in at the lodge if you plan on staying overnight.
Buford Dam Park
Buford Dam Park is another fishing spot located on Lake Lanier. Buford sits about 20 minutes outside of Cumming on the south side of the lake. Take a tour of the dam’s history and walk along it to capture scenic photos of the landscape. You can fish downstream from the dam along the Chattahoochee strand and find trout, bass, and other common freshwater species.
With many areas around Lake Lanier and the Chattahoochee River, there are plenty more fishing spots to explore. These local favorites are an excellent starting point. They’re easy to access and have calm fishing areas for beginners, too.
